Police Probe Alleged Involvement Of Soldiers In Killing Of Senator’s Aide

The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of Adeniyi Sanni who was a senior aide to the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, Solomon Adeola from Ogun State, South-West Nigeria.

Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who said the wife of Sanni told the police that her husband was stopped by some soldiers who wanted to see his papers, disclosed that the body of the deceased was found with about five bullet holes at his back and three shells of expended ammunition by his body.

In another statement by Kayode Odunaro who is the spokesperson for Senator Solomon Adeola, the deceased was stopped at a checkpoint around Berger Bus Stop on his way home and was asked to provide the particulars of the car he was driving which he did via WhatsApp through the help of his wife.

Odunaro further revealed that the wife subsequently received a call from passersby informing her of the location of her husband’s body after efforts to reach her husband proved abortive.

According to the spokesperson for the Senator, the deceased who had worked for Senator Adeola for over two decades was dumped at Toyota Bus Stop in Oshodi on Saturday morning.

Nigeria Target ‘Transformational’ Win Over England At World Cup

Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum believes knocking European champions England out of the Women’s World Cup would be “transformational” for the sport in the country as the sides prepare to meet in the last 16 on Monday.

The Super Falcons have appeared at every Women’s World Cup going back to the inaugural edition in 1991 but their build-up to this year’s tournament was overshadowed by a row with their national federation over bonuses.

They had even threatened to boycott their opening game but put that behind them to draw with Olympic champions Canada and then beat co-hosts Australia.

A draw with the Republic of Ireland then ensured that they qualified for the last 16 at the expense of Canada and set up a clash with strongly-fancied England in Brisbane.

“It would be a huge win, obviously,” Waldrum said Sunday when asked about what knocking out England would signify.

“Already with what we have accomplished Nigeria is buzzing again, from what I understand.

“I don’t think people expected us to get out of the group and to get the results we have got, so I think it has already been a big success.

“But obviously if you can not only beat the Olympic gold medallists but turn around and beat the European champions then it would be something extremely special back home for all the people in Nigeria, and more importantly for this squad, for what they have worked so hard to do.

“So it certainly could be transformational in a lot of different ways.”

‘So many weapons’

It is the third time that Nigeria have made it out of their group at the World Cup but they have never won a knockout tie.

Waldrum confirmed that star striker Asisat Oshoala is “fit and healthy” and said fellow forward Desire Oparanozie could feature for the first time since picking up an injury before the tournament.

He also said he was preparing his team to face an England side with, or without, Keira Walsh after the star midfielder missed the Lionesses’ last group game with a knee injury.

Walsh trained with the squad on Sunday for the first time since being stretchered off in England’s 1-0 win over Denmark in their second group game.

But England coach Sarina Wiegman could opt to stick with the three-woman defence which helped them outclass China 6-1 without Walsh, or revert to a back four.

“We have to prepare for both,” Waldrum said of the different tactical possibilities.

“As a coach I would expect her to go with a back three because they played ever so well in the last match with that and I don’t know why she would change.”

Of Walsh, he added: “Obviously she is a key player in their midfield for them.”

“But England also has so many weapons. You go down the list and you look at their players and all of them play in a high-profile setting so there are certainly more that can do damage to us than just her.

“They have given us a lot of challenges to prepare for and that will be just another one if she comes in.”

Nigeria Customs Service Set To Deploy Strategies To Enforce Border Closures

In compliance with the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS resolutions over the recent coup in the Niger Republic, the Federal Government has directed the immediate closure of the Nigeria/Niger borders, restricting all inbound and outbound cargoes in and out of Nigeria.

The Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale, who announced in Katsina during his visit to the Jibiya border, assured that the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS will ensure effective manning of all illegal routes into the country.

Since the military coup in the Niger Republic on July 26, entry and exit points in the country, especially towns that border the country, have become prone to illegal immigrants, as a result of the development.

To restrict any imminent breakdown of law and order, and any possible spillover effect of the political instability, the ECOWAS, among many sanctions handed down to the country, has closed all land borders.

Katsina has two major land borders, Jibiya and Kongolam with the Niger Republic, apart from other illegal routes that the Federal Government has ordered to be closed.

To enforce the order, the Acting Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale, while at the Jibiya Border Area in Katsina State, restated the commitment of the NCS to ensure total compliance with the order.

He added that even though Nigeria is a champion of economic integration in West Africa, the safety and unity of the country are non-negotiable.

The Customs Boss later had an interactive session with stakeholders, as they promised to obey every order by the Federal government and see to the peaceful coexistence of the nation.

As of the time of this report, many trucks and other vehicles conveying goods into the country via the Jibiya border are stranded, since the order came into force.

President Bola Tinubu says a comprehensive forensic audit of the Central Bank is underway, while a thorough overhaul of the Civil Service payroll is imminent

The President said this on Friday when he received the President of the World Bank, Ajay Banga at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Highlighting Nigeria’s resilience and intellectual prowess, the President implored the Bretton Woods institution to view the country as a significant player within the global community, not solely as a struggling economy.

On poverty alleviation, the President called for increased support from the World Bank, expressing optimism of a productive collaboration that will lead to mutual benefits and sustainable progress.

He also discussed ongoing efforts to address issues such as subsidy removal, foreign exchange management, inflation, liquidity, and debt management.

President Tinubu also spoke on his administration’s substantial reforms, including those aimed at consolidating improvements in Nigeria’s oil industry, enhancing the Ease of Doing Business, and prioritizing security to boost the country’s revenue generation.

The President stressed the importance of electricity generation for economic development, highlighting the turning of sod on Friday on the first phase (350MW) of the 1,350MW power generation project in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

While calling for a positive partnership with the World Bank, President Tinubu emphasized key areas of focus as job creation, digitization, and National Identity Management.

He also requested the World Bank’s support in addressing the challenges posed by the removal of cross-sectoral subsidies, particularly lessening the impact on less privileged Nigerians.

The Organised Labour in Nigeria says the National industrial court has served summons on the leadership of the NLC and TUC to answer to contempt of court charges despite the provisions of the constitution to the contrary and the objective realities

In a communique issued at the end of its emergency National executive council meeting, organised labour resolved to go on strike across the country any day labour leaders are summoned to Court by the government through the National industrial court.

Organised Labour used the communique to demand for the immediate withdrawal of what it calls “litigious terrorism” by the Federal Ministry of Justice before the end of work Friday, August 11, 2023

Labour says it will embark on a nationwide comprehensive strike beginning from Monday, August 14, 2023, if the contemptuous Court summons are not withdrawn by whosoever initiated it
